At the time of his marriage to Mehitable Barker, Dudley Carleton settled on property in Newbury, Vermont that was owned by his father. He served with the town militia in response to alarms during the Revolution. Dudley was known for his skill as a cabinetmaker including cabinets for tall clocks. He served on the committee to arrange the building of the meeting house in Newbury in 1787. Dudley served as selectman of Newbury in 1778, 1784, 1788, 1798, and 1799. He was named Justice of the Peace in 1786.[1]
Mehitable Barker and Dudley Carlton were parents of eleven children born between 1776 and 1798 in Newbury, Vermont. Michael, like his father, was a cabinetmaker working in Haverhill, NH.[2]

Dudley Carleton Junior (1748-1835)
DUDLEY CARLETON, although Carlton and Carleton are both used as spellings, Carleton is the spelling used in Dudley’s will.[27]
In his will written 17 July 1829 (filed 29 March 1836), Dudley Carleton bequeaths to beloved wife Mehitable the use of all the household furniture and clothing except the clock and the book desk and the use of a 30-acre strip of land on the west side of the farm during her natural life. Son Dudley Carlton receives the use of a 100-acre tract during his life, and if his wife Sally is widowed, she will continue this use during her life. Son John B. Carleton receives the use of the remainder of the farm and the use of the land given to Mehitable after her death, and if his wife Betsey is widowed, she will have the use of the property during her life. John B. receives the clock, the book desk, and the joiner tools. John B.’s heirs will receive the property that John B. has the use of during his life. Daughter Hannah Carleton receives forty dollars and the household goods after her mother’s decease. Sons John B. and Dudley were named executors.[27]
