Archibald was born on 26 March 1873[1] at Holloway, Islington, London. He was the eighth child and fourth son of William Carpenter and Harriet Peers who married in 1864. Archibald's father was the vicar at St James' Church, Holloway, London, at the time of his birth. His birth was registered at Islington registration office in the second quarter of 1873.
On 14 March 1874 Archibald Boyd Carpenter was baptised at St James' Church, Holloway, Islington, London. The family address was given as 50 Highbury Hill, Holloway, and his father conducted the ceremony.
In later life, Archibald appears to have used the hyphenated surname Boyd-Carpenter, Boyd being his paternal grandmother's maiden name. This practice was also adopted by his siblings.
Archibald's mother died in January 1877, aged 34. John was not yet three years old. He was the last of his mother's children before she died.
At the 1881 census Archibald Carpenter (8, born Highbury, Middlesex/London) was at a boarding school at Sussex Square, Brighton, Sussex. He was accompanied by two of his brothers, William (11) and John (9). In the meantime at this census the family home was at 7 Queens Gardens, Paddington, London. Details - father William B Carpenter (widower, 40, Vicar of Christ Church, Paddington), brother Henry J Carpenter (16, scholar), and paternal grandmother Hester Carpenter (widow, 67, born Ireland). Also resident were two visitors, one of whom was Annie M Gardner (unmarried, 27, born Hackney, Middlesex) and two servants - housemaid and cook. Annie Gardner was to become John's step-mother. John's four older sisters were also away at a boarding school, albeit it apparently tailor made with only six pupils.
In 1883 Archibald's father remarried, marrying Annie Maude (Gardner) Carpenter (1854-1915), aged 29. Archibald was about 10. His father was made Bishop of Ripon in 1884, a position he continued in until 1911.
At the 1891 census Archibald, together with his father and step-mother, and two of his siblings, appear to have been on holiday, being "lodgers" at 10 Carlisle Parade, Hastings, Sussex, an address headed by a lodging house keeper. The family details - father William B Carpenter (married, 50, Bishop of Ripon, born Liverpool), step-mother Annie M Carpenter (married, 37, authoress, born Stamford Hill, London), sister Mary Carpenter (22, student at Royal College of Music, born Tetsworth, Oxfordshire), sister Annie Carpenter (20, born Tetsworth) and Archibald B Carpenter (17, scholar, born Highbury, London). In the meantime the 1891 census recorded the family home as being at the "Episcopal Palace of Ripon" - sister Jessie Peers Carpenter (single, 24, born Tetsworth, Oxfordshire), sister Minnie Carpenter (single, 23, born Tetsworth), brother William Boyd Carpenter (single, 21, born Tetsworth), half-sister Beatrice V? M B Carpenter (5, born Ripon, Yorkshire), half-brother Victor C D B Carpenter (3, born Ripon), and an aunt? Alice C Carpenter (widow, 49, born Ireland). There were two visitors, one a seven year old child, while the other was Richard B Tollinton (single, 24, private tutor, born York, Yorkshire) who was to become his sister Minnie's husband. The Bishop's Palace retained twelve servants on the census night - housemaid, cook, kitchenmaid, scullerymaid, laundress, under housemaid, second housemaid, two nurses, butler, footman and stable boy. Other employees were in attached properties.
We know from Oxford Men and Their Colleges, 1880-1892 that Archibald matriculated at Balliol College, Oxford University on 18 October 1892, "from Harrow school".[2]
