Biography

Marriage

Oliver Perry Luce and Mary E. Carr were married 8 Mar 1843 in Greenville, Mercer, Pennsylvania [1]

Death

Mary died 30 Mar 1910 in Maquoketa, Jackson, Iowa [2] Note: It says Mary E. Luse, a female, aged 83, occupation housewife, died March 30, 1910. She was a widow, born in Pennsylvania. She died in Maquoketa of Chronic Intestinal Nephritis, and she is buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery. [3] Note: The Maquoketa Record gives 28 March 1826 as birthdate. It gives her marriage date. It says her maiden name was Carr. The Jackson Sentinel article lists her daughters as sisters.

Burial

Mary is buried at Mt Hope Cem, Maquoketa, Jackson, Iowa [4] Note: Mt. Hope Cemetery Records: lot purchased by Mary E. Luse for $60. Three graves on the lot: Mary Luse, Jas. McDonald, and Evaline McDonald.

Research Notes

Note: CONFLICTS: Mrs. McCourt's book lists her name as Mary E. Carr. The family reunion book says she was Mary E. Hoobler. Mrs. McCourt's book says she was born either in 13 Sep 1826 or 24 Aug 1819. The second date is in the reunion book. The first year agrees with her death record. Mrs. McCourt's book says she died March 30, 1911.
MARRIAGE: If the marriage date of 1834 is correct, it is unlikely that she was born in 1826. She would have been only 12 years old. The 1819 date is more likely if she was married in 1834. She would have been 15 years old.
DIVORCE? McCourt says she and her husband were separated. If they had been divorced, she would not have qualified for a Civil War widow's pension. The letter he wrote to his sister indicates he was not living with his wife, but traveled a lot.
MAIDEN NAME: Her obituary in the MAQUOKETA RECORD said her maiden name was Carr. Her son, Benjamin's biography said it was Hoobler. Both names are common in Mercer County, Pennsylvania.
