Biography

Howard Gustave Carson was born on September 16, 1921 in Richmond (Independent City), Virginia. He was the son of John Carson and Dorothy Elnora Thurston. [1]

Howard and his family moved to Cowlitz County, Washington circa 1927.

The 1930 Federal Census, taken April 12th, listed Howard, age 8, as living with his parents John and Dorothy, his brother Robert J. and his sisters Dorothy Irene and Florence Virginia at 111A Route #1 in Mount Solo Precinct, Cowlitz, Washington. [2]

The 1940 Federal Census, taken April 19th, listed Howard, age 18, as living with his parents John and Dorothy, his brothers Robert J. and John B., his sisters Dorothy Irene and Florence Virginia, two employees and three guests at Castle Rock Route #1 in Jackson Precinct, Cowlitz, Washington. He had graduated from high school and his occupation was listed as paper machine helper at a fiber plant. [3]

Howard Gustave Carson married Glenna Mae Fritz on July 13, 1940 in Castle Rock, Cowlitz, Washington. [4]

The 1940 Kelso City Directory listed Howard as a millworker and as living with his wife Glenna at 1316 11th Avenue, Apartment 17 in Longview, Washington. [5]

On February 16, 1942, Howard, age 20, registered for the World War II Draft at Longview, Cowlitz, Washington. He was living with his wife Glenna at 337 23rd Avenue in Longview, Cowlitz, Washington. He worked for the Longview Fiber Company in Longview, Cowlitz, Washington. His height was listed as 5'-10", his weight as 150 pounds, his eye color as brown, his hair color as brown and his complexion as light. [6]

The 1948 Kelso City Directory listed Howard as a salesman at Sears and Roebuck Company and as living with his wife Glenna at 523 Nevada Drive in Longview, Washington. [7]

The 1950 Federal Census, taken May 3rd, listed Howard, age 28, as living with his wife Glenna, his sons Robert J. and Howard G. and a lodger at 2949 Laurel Road in Kelso, Cowlitz, Washington. His occupation was as the manager of building material at a retail and wholesale department store. [8]

The 1953 Kelso City Directory listed Howard as a Division Manager with Sears and as living with his wife Glenna at 2949 Laurel Road in Longview, Washington. [9]

The 1958 Kelso City Directory listed Howard as Department Manager of Plumbing and Building Materials at Sears as living with his wife Glenna in Castle Rock, Washington. [10]

In a June 15, 1996 newspaper Obituary, it was stated, "Howard G. Carson - Longtime Castle Rock resident Howard G. Carson, 74, of 1508 19th Ave. in Longview, died June 13, 1996, at the local hospice. He was born Sept. 16, 1921, in Richmond, Va., to John and Dorothy (Thurston) Carson. Mr. Carson worked 30 years for Sears as a building supply salesman. Prior to that, he worked for Longview Fiber Co. He had lived in Longview for one year, moving from Castle Rock, where he had lived for 65 years. He was interested in farming, his family and his grandchildren. He and Glenna Fritz were married in Castle Rock on July 13, 1940. She survives him at home. Also surviving are four sons, Robert J. Carson and Scott Carson , both of Longview, and Howard G. Carson of Kent, Wash., and Gary J. Carson of castle Rock; a foster daughter Margie Wakefield of Longview; three brothers, Robert E. Carson of Trenton, Ill., John Carson of Albuquerque, N. M. and Jim Carson of Palos Verde, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters Dorothy Muskrat and Florence Sabin. ....... " [11]

Howard passed away on June 13, 1996 in Longview, Cowlitz, Washington at age 74. [12] He was buried in Whittle and Hubbard Cemetery in Castle Rock, Cowlitz, Washington. [13]
