Obituary

Worrall Reed Or Nick Carter Jr, 86 W.R. CARTER JR.

Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Tuesday, March 21, 2000

Worrall Reed Nick Carter Jr. died in his Suffolk home surrounded by his family on March 18, 2000.

Born in Norfolk on May 10, 1913, he was a longtime resident of that city until retiring to Suffolk in 1978. Nick had an indomitable spirit and exuberance for living that left an impression on everyone he encountered. His sense of humor and compassionate heart will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

Nick had a long and distinguished career as an insurance claims adjuster. He owned and operated the Tidewater Adjustment Co. and worked as an independent for many of the nation's biggest insurance companies. Nick served as president of the Peninsula Claims Association, as well as having served in advisory roles related to the claims industry.

Nick spent 13 years as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America and served as chairman to that organization's state Troop Committee. He was an active fund-raiser for the American Red Cross and participated in many other causes too numerous to list. One of his most fondly enjoyed associations was membership in the Swindlers golf club.

Nick was an active and beloved member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Chuckatuck, Va. He was married to the late Margaret MacKechnie Carter and is survived by their three children, W.R. Carter III, J. Currie MacKechnie Carter, Cary Ambler Carter and four grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church. Donations to the rector's discretionary fund of the church or to a charity of the donor's choice are encouraged in lieu of flowers.
