Biography

Not a lot of information is known about Mary CARTON, wife of John Scrimgeour.

Mary married her first husband John SCRIMGEOUR in 1888 in Victoria^[1], however he died in 1910 at Terang. Mary married Thomas DOOLAN in 1920^[2].

Mary's death notice shows that she outlived Thomas, and was the mother of 7 children^[3]. The text of her death notice reads,
"DOOLAN (Scrimgeour)-On October 23, at the residence of her daughter (Mrs. S. Clarke), Noorat, Mary, widow of the late Thomas Doolan, loved mother of Elizabeth (Mrs. Fagan, Terang), James (Terang), Annie (Mrs. S. Clarke, Noorat), Margaret (Mrs. Everitt (sic), West Geelong), Thomas (deceased, late 1st AIF), Agnes (Mrs. Theophilus Nelson, North Williamstown) and John (deceased)-RIP." Her age is not stated, therefore there is no information to work out an approximate birth year other than to use the standard convention of 25 years before her first marriage. This would give a birth year of 1863.

The Carol Leatham Rootsweb family tree for this person (listed as Mary CASTON) has a birth year of 1859 but with no further information included^[4].
