John Grandy Cartwright was born about 1838 in North Carolina, the child of Sarah Grandy and Morgan Cartwright. His family came west to Hardeman County, Tennessee, around 1840 and were enslaving 21 people.[1]
By 1850 the family was living in District 8, Fayette County, Tennessee, and John was 12 years old. His father was farming and owned real estate valued at $4,900.[2] His parents were enslaving 41 people ranging in age from three months old to 40 years old.[3]
In 1860 he was 22 years old and living with his parents and five siblings in District 8, Fayette County, next door to the family of his future wife Ethel Georgiana Ketchum, who was five years old at the time.[4] The family was enslaving 50 people ranging in age from 2 months to 52 years old.[5]
John enlisted in the Civil War on the Confederate side as a private in Company B of McDonald's Battalion, Tennessee Cavalry, which by the end of the war was known as the 3rd (Forrest's) Regiment Tennessee Cavalry.[6]He remained a private. On 4 May 1865, his battalion surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama, and he was recorded as a prisoner of war.[7]
On 22 February 1877, he married Ethel Georgiana Ketchum in Fayette County.[8]
In 1880 he was living in Fayette County, near Somerville, with his wife and four children: Lula (age 6), Georgia (age 2), Eugene (age 1), and Albert (age 3 months). Ethel's mother Georgiana Ketchum was living with them, as was a relative named Mary Ketchum [9]
John Grandy Cartwright died at an unknown date and place.
