Ruth Carver, daughter of David and Ruth Carver, was born 14 Dec 1701, in Weymouth, Massachusetts, according to the vital records.[1]
The Shoemaker Book[2] lists Ruth born 10 Dec 1700. Blair and Shoemaker copied it from "Notes" on the Carver family. NEHGR 55:221. Where the author of "Notes" got it was not revealed. This date has caused some confusion.
Ruth is not mentioned in the distribution of David's estate. Sarah (Carver) Pain, eldest daughter of David Carver, is among the children listed in David's probate records, but her birth was not recorded in Weymouth. Sarah married 2 March 1720/1, in Connecticut. Several scenario's have been suggested
Ruth and Sarah are the same person, born 14 Dec 1701. "Sarah, whose birth is not recorded at Weymouth, but she may have been identical with Ruth (cf. Lincoln's Hingham)..."[3] Consulting Lincoln's Hingham to compare, the only relevant statement is: Whitmarsh, "Ruth, m. Dec 14, 1696, David Carver..." this looks like a case of confusion in reading.[4][5]
Ruth's birth date 10 Dec 1700 (see above) was a recording error by "Notes" (NEHGR 55:221, 1901.), which gives no birth date for Sarah.
Ruth was born 10 Dec 1700 and Sarah was born 14 Dec 1701 - possibility suggested by NEHGR 118:103. " in Jonathan Carver of Kent, Conn."
There is a five year gap between the Dec 1696 marriage of David Carver and Ruth Whitmarsh and the Dec 1701 birth of Ruth. There is also a three year gap between Ruth and Samuel. Plenty of time to have Sarah. Sarah was the name of Ruth's mother. Naming her first daughter Sarah, would have been in keeping with customs.
