Biography

There are no Shap, Westmorland, England register records for the period 1620 to 1664. Thomas' father was Richard Castley and he had a younger brother Richard - from the Court Roll of 1686.

The first mention, I have found so far, of Thomas Castley in Shap, Westmorland, England is in 1660. "Tho: Castlehow is admitted tenant of 6 roods of arable ground in Rosgill ..... more or less of the yearly rent of 1/- ob [halfpenny] by .... surrender of John Stewardson ...... ". On another page, the name on the Rent roll was John Stewardson and has admitted to Tho: Castlehow added.^[1]

Thomas Castley was married, and of Rosegill, by 20 Jun 1669 when his son Thomas was baptised at Shap, Westmorland, England.^[2]

Thomas Castley and Richard Castley Senior and Junior appear in a 1669 List of Tennants at Rosegill. There was also a Richard Castley at Wet Sleddale - he may or maynot be a different Richard. On the list - Thomas Castley then John/Richard Robinson then Richard Castley Sen. Further down - Peter Wilson, Richard Castley Jnr, Thomas Castley. Richard Castley under Wett Sleddall.^[3]

Fines agreement - to be paid off over 5 years. 29 Jul 1672 • D/LONS/L Wharton Manors: Rosgill & Wet Sleddale those whose names are published have agreed to pay unto the said Sir John Lowther 12 years annual rent ........ Tho Castley to pay for 10/1, Richard Castley Sen to pay for 9/- ob [paid] by Tho Castley. New tenant .... Richard Castley rent 8/- fine £4/16/-

1674/75 Hearth Tax Return Sledall in the bottom, Shap, Westmorland There was no Rosgill location in this return. Two Richard Castlehow and Thomas Castlehow all here. ^[4]

1686 Tenancy 1686 • D/LONS/L Wharton Manors: Rosgill & Wet Sleddale Court Roll 1655-1694. Admit Thomas Castley holder of a tenement of 9/- ob after decease of Richard, his father. Ob means halfpenny.

Thomas Castley of Rosegill was buried at Shap, Westmorland , England on 11 Apr 1694.^[5]

In 1694 Thomas Castley heir to Thomas his father of 19/1 ob (halfpenny) viz 18/1 plus 1/- ob rental of land acquired from Ed Smith John Stewardson & Richard Stewardson dated 2 Feb 1660.^[6]
