Gloucester Township was first known as Township B. when it was surveyed in 1792.

In 1969 Carleton County was dissolved and Gloucester became part of the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton. In 1980 the Township of Gloucester was incorporated as a City. In 2001 the former cities of Ottawa, Nepean, Kanata, Gloucester, Vanier and Cumberland, the former townships of West Carleton, Goulburn, Rideau, and Osgoode, and the former village of Rockcliffe Park became part of the new City of Ottawa.
