Before 1867, see Iroquois, Canada West.

Iroquois was settled in the late 1700s by United Empire Loyalists, primarily from the British military. Located in Matilda Township, it was originally called Matilda after the township. In 1856 the post office name was changed to Iroquois. Iroquois was partially flooded by the creation of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1958. Unlike the Lost Villages of Cornwall and Osnabruck Townships, however, the town was simply relocated to higher ground in the same area. In 1997, Morrisburg was amalgamated with the Village of Iroquois and Matilida and Williamsburg Townships into the Township of South Dundas.
