This tree contains the descendants of Thomas Tether and Ann Gasking. Thomas was born about 1640 in the village of Bilsthorpe on the edge of Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. If you are reading this and your surname is Tether, Teather or Tetther then there is every chance that you are one of these descendants as this tree is by far the largest. Descendants of Thomas have spread out, not only across the UK but across the world with significant populations to be found today in Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand.
Thomas' grandson Edward Tether was the first to move away from Bilsthorpe - to nearby Ollerton. The following generation began to see families migrating to other neighbouring villages such as Eakring, Ompton and Rufford.
In time, families moved further afield out of Nottinghamshire and into neighbouring counties. Edward's brother William Tether lived most of his life in Caunton but in the mid 1740's his son Edward Tether and his family moved to Timberland, a small village in the fens of Lincolnshire to the east. Eventually, Edward's brother John Tether bought his family to the area too and their father also moved there in later life. They and their descendants congregated around the neighbouring villages of Timberland, Potterhanworth and Nocton.
Two brothers, William Tether and Samuel Tether, Great, Great Grandsons of Thomas were the first to move northwards to the neighbouring. County of Yorkshire. They and their descendants settled in the villages of Thorne and Fishlake.
Samuels son John Tether was born in Fishlake in 1784. In 1809, at the height of the Napoleonic Wars, he was convicted of larceny and sent to serve in the navy - a sentence that was not unusual at that time. Several years later, perhaps as a consequence of his exposure to sea life, he moved with his family to the port of Hull where his descendants remain to this day. Interestingly enough, this branch of the family still spell their surname Tether.
