Biography

"Lucia E. Catlin, daughter of the late John and Clarissa J. Catlin, of Elizabeth, N. J., died at Tanglewood, Haines Falls, New York, on July 8, 1921.

"The announcement of the death of Miss Lucia E. Catlin brings back a portion of early Madison history thai; is most interesting. Her father,John Catlin, was one of the pioneers of territorial Wisconsin and was clerk of he first territorial court. With Moses M. Strong, another of Wisconsin's pioneers, John Catlin staked out the central portion of what is now the city of Madison in February of 1837, working in the snow and sleeping; in a hut of brush under the bank of what is now Gorham st., and spending the night at St. Cyrs hut which was located near Pheasant Branch.

"Madison has been made the capitol of the territory of .Wisconsin by the first territorial legislature in 1836. John Catlin and Moses Strong were delegated by the legislature to stake out the proposed capitol city from a map which had been drawn by Judge Doty who owned the property. In fact the first log house in Madison was built for John Catlin by St. Cyr on the location of the present post office."^[1]
