This profile is part of the Chamberlayne Name Study.

Birth and Parentage

Richard was born at Astley Castle[1] in Warwickshire, in about 1636. This is an inexact date, based upon his gravestone inscription, which states that he died in the 39th year of his life. [2]He was the son of Richard Chamberlayne, and grandson of Richard Chamberlayne of Temple House and the Court of Wards. His mother was Bridget née Pye, daughter of Sir Walter Pye.[3]

Marriage and Family

On 21 February 1657 he married widow Elizabeth Wyndham, née Mede, daughter of Sir John Mede, Knight, of Wendon Lofts, Essex. [3]Her first husband, Thomas Wyndham had died nearly three years previously on 1 May 1653.

That summer, on 21 Jul 1657, it seems that he was party to a bargain and sale between himself and one Robert Briscoe of Lichfield, gent., made of a messuage and lands in Astley. [4]

The National Archives hold a document relating to a 1667 case brought by plaintiff William Windham, Elizabeth's son by her first marriage to Thomas, against defendants: Dame Frances Wyndham, Sir John Holland baronet, Sir John Hobart baronet, Thomas Mede, Richard Chamberlaine and Elizabeth Chamberlaine his wife.[5]

A draft settlement between William, Richard and Elizabeth was also made in 1674. [6]

They had four daughters:

  • Mary
  • Martha
  • Katharine
  • Jane

all of whom survived except Jane, who died as an infant.

The Norfolk Record Office holds documents relating to Richard and Elizabeth Chamberline (Chamberlain), in relation to Richard's stepson William Windham, including a 1671 letter from Richard Chamberlaine to William Windham about Windham's mother Elizabeth... Richard and Elizabeth's daughter Margaret seems also to have asked William to lend her money. [7]

Death

Richard Chamberline passed away and was buried at St Margaret's church, Felbrigg, Norfolk on 25 August 1675. His gravestone reads:

Here lyes below interrd ye body of Richard Chamberline Esq.
