Biography

John Alfred Chantler was born on 23 February 1839 in Westminster, London, England, son of George Chantler and Hannah Tennant.

John, son of George Chandler & Hannah Chandler, was born on 23 February 1839 and baptised on 17 March 1839 in St John the Evangelist, Smith Square, London, Westminster, England.^[1][2]

John's birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1839 in Westminster St Margaret, London, England.^[3][4]

In the 1841 census John (age 2) was living with his mother and siblings in St Pancras, Middlesex, England. His father was not present.^[5]

In the 1851 census John (age 12) was the scholar of James Vincent in Gravesend, Milton next Gravesend, Kent, England.^[6]

John, son of George Chantler, married Maria Letchford on 12 October 1857 on Saint Marylebone: Marylebone Road, Westminster, England. John was a Pianoforte Maker like his father. Maria's mother, Maria Rebecca (Hall) Chantler (1816-1900), was living with John's father and they had several children together by this time. So the John and Maria that married were kind of step-siblings.^[7][8]

They had one child, John Alfred Chantler, born in 1857 in Gravesend.

John died at the age of 23 in 1862 and was buried on 11 November 1862 in Hackney, Middlesex, England.^[9]

John's death was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1862 in the West London district.^[10][11]

Research Notes

It is hard to be sure if the death date is correct. The age in the death registration matches. We can be reasonably sure that he died between 1857 when he married and 1864 when his wife remarried. Neither he or his wife have been found in the 1861 census.
