Thomas was born in 1829. He is the son of Daniel Chapman and his wife Martha Jackson. He was christened on 4 Jan 1829 in Bradfield, Yorkshire, England.[1]
Thomas Chapman, 20, bachelor of Little Matlock, forgeman, son of Daniel Chapman, forgeman, married Annis Crookes, 18, of Wadsley, daughter of George Crookes, mason, by banns on 4 Feb 1849 at Sheffield, St Nicholas, Bradfield, Yorkshire, England. The witnesses were M Guilder and Richard Gillatt.[2][3]
Thomas and Martha lost their son William in 1864 during The Great Sheffield Flood which followed the failure of Dale Dyke Dam. Thomas had tried to save him, but was unable to keep hold of him and William drowned in the flood.[20] Thomas broke a hole through the wall into his brother Daniel’s house only to find the walls destroyed and Daniel and his family also swept away in the flood. Thomas and the rest of his family were rescued by Harrison Marshall and another man who carried them on their backs up the hill to the Rock Inn.
