James Charnley was born in Salford, Lancashire, England. He was the son of Robert Charnley and Emma Hodgson. [1]

The 1881 Census stated [in reference to James "Name: James Henry Charnley was Age:17yrs Born In: 1864 Manchester England. Event Place Pendleton, Lancashire, England Registration District Salford His Profession: noted as Engineers Clerk [2]

They had a son born 1893 Henry Halsall Charnley. [5]

The family left England and settled in Auckland, New Zealand. [6] His wife Sarah and son Henry are noted as traveling 1900. I can only assume James came ahead to find a job and a place to live for the family and they followed.

The electoral Roll shows them in NZ by 1900. They were active members of the Salvation Army. MAJOR J.J. TOOMER was the National Secretary of the Salvation Army Social Work.

His wife Sarah died in 1911. At the time the family were living at 141 Victoria St Auckland.

At the time they were living in the Auckland Ferry Buildings where James was Custodian. Later they moved to the NZ Insurance Building to live - James was the Custodian.

On the handwritten Death Registration form it noted he passed away at his home at the Insurance Building in Queen St Auckland New Zealand on the 25 February 1925 at the age of 50yrs. He was buried by James Weir [the Undertaker] on the 27 February 1925. Officiating Minister Mr. Toomer was from the Salvation Army. I have pondered over the Birth of James the 1881 Census gives his birth year c.1864. The age given 31yrs and born c. 1866 when he departed from London on the Tongariro (master Francis Mayoss) for Auckland, New Zealand. Steerage class. Recorded. Neither of these tie in with him being 50yrs when he died in 1925 in NZ Also if he was 50yrs in 1925 means he was born c. 1875. which puts him approx 17yrs when married. I'm still sorting this out.

James Charnley was born in Salford Lancashire England UK. His first marriage was to Sarah Halsall on 12 June 1892 at the Unitarian Chapel, King Street, Northampton, Northamptonshire. They had a son 14 March 1893. Henry Halsall Charnley. The family left England and settled in Auckland New Zealand. The electoral Roll shows them in NZ by 1900. They were active members of the Salvation Army.
