Right Honourable Hedges Eyre Chatterton P.C., LL.D., J.P., the eldest son of Abraham Chatterton and Jane Tisdall. He was born 5 July 1819 in the city of Cork[1] [2]
In August, 1838, Eyre (a student at Trinity) and his brother (13, prob Abraham Thomas), 'sons of the, late Abraham Chatterton, Esq.' were hit by the steamer, Arab, on the river (at Cork) while their punt was moored 'opposite the hotel at Monkstown on the Cove side). Their boat capsized with Eyre beneath the punt for three minutes, holding on to the boat, and the younger lad's face was hit by a paddle and under the steamer for a time, though he managed to escape by his strong swimming. They were rescued by the Monkstown ferryboat. Their guardian, Counsellor Daane, intended to bring two actions, one on behalf of his wards, and the other due to the injury down to his his boat.—Cork Constitution[3]
Hedges (or Eyre) graduated Trinity and was called to the Bar in 1847.[1]
Hedges married Mary Halloran (daughter of the Rev William Halloran) on 11 Sep 1845 at Macroom.
On 11 Sept 1845, Hedges Eyre Chatterton (26, barrister, of Monte Vide, Parish of St Ann, (something), Cork, son of Abraham Chatterton, solicitor) married Mary Halloran (21, of Magowney Glebe, daughter of William Halloran, clerk, rector of Magowney) at Magowney, Cork, Ireland.[4]
Mary became ill in 1897 & never fully recovered. She died 22 Dec 1901, aged 77 years. They had no children.
He married a second time - Florence Henrietta Gore (widow of Captain Edward William Dunlo Croker of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and daughter of Major Charles Gore, 72nd Seaforth Highlanders) on 14 Aug 1902 in Devon, and the home of Florence’s daughter Mrs Tuke..[1]
James Joyce remarks in Ulysses that Chatteron's second marriage at the age of 85 infuriated his nephew, who had been waiting patiently for years to inherit his money.[2]
They had no children but Hedges was step father to Alisa Nancy Croker (m. Robert Sheffield Stuart) & Violet Croker.[1]

Chatterton left the House of Commons on his appointment to the newly created judicial office of Vice-Chancellor of Ireland in 1867, an office which was abolished when he retired in 1904[2]
He was a JP for counties Cork and Dublin and immortalised in James Joyce’s Ulysses at Ned Lambert’s Uncle. [5] He was painted by Thomas A Jones (1823-1893) RHA and the portrait was left to the Kings Inn.[1]
He earned the ire of the irasicle Jonathan Christian, the Lord Justice of Appeal in Chancery, but enjoyed the confidence of the Lord Chancellor of Ireland, Thomas O'Hagan, 1st Baron O'Hagan[2]
Hedges Eyre Chatterton (late Vice Chancellor) died on the 30 Aug 1910 (aged 91 years) at Newpark, Blackwoods, Rathdown[6] leaving nearly 40k in personal estate.[1]
He was buried in Deansgrange Deansgrange Cemetery, Deans Grange, County Dublin, Ireland with his first wife, Mary.[1] [7]
Florence died 26 Jan 1930 at 5 Sidmonton Square, Bray and was buried with Hedges & Mary at Deasngarange. [1]

Was Vice-Chancellor of Ireland, 1867, to 1904 , ;created Privy Councillor, 1867; Justice of the Peace for counties Cork and Dublin. Called to the Irish Bar, 1843; Q.C., 1858 ; Solicitor-General for Ireland, 1866; Attorney-General, 1867 ; represented Dublin University in Parliament, 1867. Married, firstly, in 1845, Mary, who died in 1901, daughter of the Rev. William Halloran; secondly, in 1902, Florence H. , daughter of the late Major Charles Gore, 72nd Seaforth Highlanders, and widow of Captain Edward William Dunlo Croker, of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, of Newpark, Blackrock. Clubs: Carlton, Kildare Street, Dublin, and Royal St. George Yacht. The Right Hon. H. E. Chatterton died August, 1910." [8]
