Thomas Cheaney writes a letter seeking a license and giving permission for his son Benonia (under the age of 21) to marry Elizabeth Fretwell in January 1817.[1]
A transcription of the letter from Thomas Cheaney to the Bondsman: "MARRIAGE BOND: CHANEY, Benoni and Elizabeth FRETWELL or TRETWELL of BC. (Groom signs CHEANY.) Bond Date: 28 January 1817. Bondsman: Pascal FRETWELL. CONSENT of Thos. CHEANY given 24 January 1817 for the marriage of Miss Elizabeth FRETWELL to "Benonia CHANEY my son " he being under the age of 21 years" .... "I being not able to ride to your office". Attest: Mark EVANS, Heritage CHEANEY, George POTTS. Marriage Date: 30 January 1817. 2nd BC mg register, pg 59. (Parties' names given as Benona CHANEY and Elizabeth TRETWELL in mg register.) (There is a FRETWELL in the 1820 BC census.)"
