OBITUARY.
MR. D. C. CHILCOTT.
On Friday morning, 20th December last, there passed away at his home, "Merry Vale," one of the most widely-known and one of the oldest settlers of the Dookie district, in the person of Mr David Charles Chilcott.
He was a native of Tasmania being born in the Deloraine district, and arrived in Victoria when a young man of about nineteen summers. A few years afterwards he married and settled in Dookie, where by assiduity and carefulness be built up a comfortable home for wife and children.
The late Mr Chilcott was always ready to fulfil a citizen's part in the welfare and progress of the district and his genial disposition won for him a wide circle of friends.
His death may be attributed to two serious accidents, one of which occurred on the railway some time ago, and from which he had not wholly recovered when he was thrown from a spirited horse, sustaining injury to the spine. Although the best medical aid in Melbourne was procured and an operation performed, it did not prove successful. Afterwards he was under the special care of Dr. Florence in Mooroopna Hospital. but despite medical skill, paralysis of the lower parts of the body set in. He was taken to his home at "Merry Vale," Dookie, where he had the constant attendance of Nursing Sister Coverlid, until, after months of patiently-borne suffering, he passed peacefully to his rest, at the comparatively early age of 63 years.
The funeral took place on Sunday, 22nd. The cortege which followed his remains from his home to the Katandra Cemetery was the largest seen in the district for many years—testifying to the esteem with which the family is regarded.
The service at the house and at the grave was conducted by Rev. W. Kelly. The mortuary arrangements were carried out by Mr N. Torgrimson, Dookie.
Mr Chilcott leaves a widow and a grown-up family of three sons and four daughters, viz., William, Donald, David, Mrs Curtain (Wagga, New South Wales), Mrs Dunlop (Culcairn, New South Wales), Margaret and Euphemia.
An In Memoriam Service will be held in Katandra Church next Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock.
