Biography

Mary Chilman was born in 1818 in London, England. Her parents were [[ ^[1]. Her parents were Richard Chilman and Elizabeth Sudbury and her brother Richard Chilman jnr was the local secretary of the Plymouth Company.

She arrived at New Plymouth, New Zealand, onboard the ship Blenheim on 19 November 1842.

She died at New Plymouth on 11 September 1911, aged 93. She was buried with her husband in Te Henui Cemetery, New Plymouth ^[2].

OBITUARY

Her gravestone has: "Mary King, Landed at Taranaki 7th December 1842."

By the death, which occurred yesterday, of Mrs. Thomas King, another of the few links with the earliest settlement of this own is snapped. The deceased lady, who was a Miss Chilman, sister of Mr. Richard Chilman, one of the first settlers, came out from Home in the barque Blenheim, arriving on November 7,1842, and subsequently married Mr. Thomas King, who came out in the William Bryan in. March, 1841, with Mr. Chilman. She was of a quiet, retiring nature and most lovable disposition, and despite her great age she was in her ninety-fourth year she, retained her faculties in a wonderful degree, till quite lately taking a lively interest in all that went on around her. She leaves a family of four, Mr. Henry King, of Maugorei, Mr. Newton King, Dr. Truby King, of Dunedin, and Mrs. F. W. Marchant, of Timaru. ^[3].
