Biography
Leonard Chipchase was born in West Ham, Essex, England.
Leonard was a Barber.
Leonard John Chipchase (1918-1988) was born on the 24th February 1918 [1] [2] in West Ham, Essex. [3] He was the son of Thomas Ambrose Chipchase & Bertha Ann Vale. [3]
He trained as a barber and in 1939 he was employed as a barber's assistant in Newhaven, Sussex. [1]
He served in the RAF during WW2 and was stationed in Egypt. He subsequently told his family that he cut the hair of several of the military leaders including a visiting Chiang Kai-Shek. [4] (This could well have been during November 1943 during the "Cairo Conference".)
He married Greta Ryan in 1946 at St John the Evangelist church, New Ferry, Cheshire. [4] [5] They had met in Blackpool a few years previously when he was on leave and she was on a day trip with a friend. [4]
They initially lived in East Ham, Essex with his family but moved up to Kirkdale in Liverpool in the late 1940s where he opened a barber shop. [6] They lived there for over 20 years [7] and their 2 children were born in the area.
Not long after they moved down south and were in Loughton, Essex for some years.
He died on the 1st October 1998 [2] [8] and was buried following a service at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Wanstead. [4]
