Biography

Christiana Agnese Valborg Christensen, known as Anna, was born 17 August 1864 in Jelling, Vejle, Denmark to Niels and Kirsten (Andersen) Christensen.^[1] She was their oldest child. Her mother Kirsten died when Anna was six years old, and her father remarried when she was nine years old to Maren Jensen on 21 November 1873 in Jelling. Anna had three younger half-siblings.

At the age of nineteen, Anna emigrated to the U.S. in May 1884 aboard the ship Hekla. She arrived at the port of New York on 31 May 1884 and made her way to Chicago, Illinois to join her younger sister Mette Marie (known as Mary) who had emigrated the previous year. It was in Chicago that she met and married Peter Phillipsen on 14 November 1890 when she was 26 years old.^[2]

Peter was a house carpenter by trade and raised his family in Chicago, and Lake Forest, a suburb north of Chicago. In 1923 he moved the family to Altadena in southern California. Anna and Peter were the parents of three children:

Anna died on 12 October 1943 at the home of her daughter where she was living, 2291 El Sereno Avenue in Altadena, California. She died of angina pectoris and was 79 years old.^[3]
