James Lawrence Claghorn was born on July 5, 1817 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John W. Claghorn (b. Aug 24, 1789) and Eliza Crumby (born May 16, 1789). James was educated in Philadelphia schools, unlike his friends who went to private schools. At age 14, his father was instrumental in getting him hired as a clerk for auctioneers Thomas Gill & Company, the firm he worked for.
In 1836 his father and another employee, John B Myers, began their own auctioneer firm, Myers & Claghorn. James followed them and continued working as a clerk until his father retired in December 1840. Mr. Myers formed a new company and brought James on as a partner. James never took a day off from the age of 14 when he started working until the day he retired in 1861.
James was a generous patron of the arts and spent his wealth providing large galleries for exhibitions of paintings, drawings, and sculptures. He was very public spirited and always promoting a pet art project.
He was one of the first members of the Union League of Philadelphia which led to his election to the board of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
On December 10, 1841, James married Julia Raymond (1822-1904).
Their son James Raymond Claghorn was born October 5, 1842 and died September 9, 1906.
James Lawrence Claghorn died on August 24, 1884 at the age of 66.
His wife Julia Raymond Claghorn died on October 11, 1904 at the age of 84. They were both interred in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, PA.
