Treaty of Westphailia

Adriaen Clant, son of Eilco clant, was a country gentleman Ommelander the deposit Nittersum to Stedum. His mother Willemina "Willemijne" stemmed from the Brussels family Hinckaert. He had been known as three brothers and two sisters. He was delegated on behalf of Groningen in 1648 as a negotiator in the peace of Westphalia. That also seems to him personally no harm to have laid by adopting the necessary gifts. [1] Clant pictured on the front row of the painting, Gerard ter Borch was the signing of the peace treaty of Westphalia. Of the six negotiators with raised finger, he is the third person from the left. [2]

THE MEANING of the GENUS CLANT The genus Clant has been important for the Borg Nittersum and also for the village of Stedum. Famous is the tomb of the Clant family in the church of Stedum, by order of Johan Clant by the famous sculptor Romboudt Verhulst manufactured in 1672. This Sculptor was also the creator of the tomb in the church in Midwolde. On top of the tomb lies the famous Adriaan Clant , carved out of marble. At the headboard we find on both sides an angel figure and against the wall a large number of white marble family arms, grouped around a dark oval stone, with the following inscription in gold letters (translated from Latin): 'To eternal remembrance of the famous descendant, renowned by a long series of very noble ancestors, Adriaan Clant van Stedum, Lord of Nittersum, because of his excellent abilities appointed several times among the great mighty representatives of the province in which he was born, and for his great merits. For 9 years, on behalf of that province for the salvation of the state, until the high meeting of the General States of the United Netherlands; to send the eternal peace between the Spaniards and the United Netherlands to Munster in Westphalia; whose dear mortal remains after he had lived for 66 years were respectfully buried in this tomb by his son Johan Clant of Stedum, Lord of Nittersum, Stedum, Ringenum, Uitwierda, toparch of Loppersum, Eestrum, Tenbuir etc., deputy to the Assembly of the States-General of the United Netherlands, and precisely at this place, where in the midst of a long series of ancestors the ashes of his noble grandfather, Eilco Clant of Stedum, lord of Nittersum, during his life the most influential among the deputies of the United Netherlands and the most famous among the deputies of this province. To his great-grandfather, who is supposed to be of an equally beautiful background, namely Egbert Clant of Stedum, lord of Nittersum, a man of authority among the main Ommelanders, who once signed in their name the glorious Union of Utrecht, has Fierce Bellona envies this resting place, which he, who built this memorial for his noble father in the year of Christ 1672, hopes,.
