Biography

Grace May was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1870, the daughter of Harrison and Carrie (Williams) Clark.^[1] She grew up in Gloucester, where her mother was the head of household in 1880, raising 5 children aged 4-15 years of age.^[2]

She attended the State Normal School in Salem, Massachusetts, a training school for teachers, in 1890.^[3] After graduation, she was hired to work at the Highland School in Somerville, Massachusetts, in 1893.^[4] She remained an educator at the school until as late as 1939, when she was teaching the 6th grade there.^[5] She also served on the Executive Committee for the Somerville Teachers' Association in 1910, as the representative for the Highland School.^[6]

While working in Somerville, she was a long-time resident of neighboring Medford, sharing a home with her mother and siblings. In 1920, she lived with her mother, sister Harriet, also a teacher, and nephew Harriet Cody, a high school principal.^[7] In 1930, she owned her own home in Medford valued at $10,000.^[8]

Grace died in 1951. She is buried with her family at the Oak Grove Cemetery in her hometown of Gloucester, Massachusetts.^[9]
