He was the third son. He came from Holme House Yorkshire.
He immigrated to the Swan River Colony arriving on 3/2/1830 on the Tranby with his brother Michael and nine indentured servants.
James advertised that he was going to leave the colony in February of 1838.
Later, in August, he was selling his stock from the Peninsula Farm.
James Smith Clarkson left the colony, by ship, during 1838 and temporarily lived in the eastern Colonies. James leased his land on the Peninsula, and a house in Perth, through George Lazenby. James did not return for 15 years. He returned in January 1854 on the Struan.
He never married.
He was buried in East Perth Cemetery.
