Bethiah Clafton was born about 1825 in Ossett, Yorkshire, England, and baptised on 25th Feb 1825 at Dewsbury, All Saints, Yorkshire, daughter of George and Mary Clafton. At that time her father was a Miner, and the family was living in Ossett.[1]

On 6th Jun 1841, Bethia Cloughton, aged 15, had no declared occupation and was living with her father George and sister Nancy (7) at Chickenley Lane, Soothill, Yorkshire. Her birthplace was Yorkshire, England.[2]

On 30th Mar 1851, Bithiah Claughton, aged 25 and unmarried, was a Worsted Frame Tenter living with her father George, stepmother Ann and their extended family at Soothill, Yorkshire. Her birthplace was Chickenley, Yorkshire.[3]

On 7th Apr 1861, Bethia Clafton, aged 35 and marital condition not declared, was a Rag Sorter and she and her assumed daughter Elizabeth Clafton (9) were boarding with Hannah Broadhead (32) and her five children at Pepper Alley, Gawthorpe, Yorkshire. Her birthplace was Gawthorpe, Yorkshire.[4]

On 22nd Sep 1862, John Clayton, aged 39 and a widower, married Bethia Clafton, aged 37 and a spinster, at Dewsbury, All Saints, Yorkshire. At that time he was living in Ossett and she was living in Gawthorpe. He was a Labourer and his father was Robert Clayton, Bricklayer. She didn’t declare an occupation and her father was George Clafton, Coal Miner. He signed his name and she signed with her mark and their witnesses were Paul Ward and Henry Ellis.[5]
