Henry Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyme was born on 16 April 1720 with the name Henry Clinton at birth. He was the son of Henry Clinton, 7th Earl of Lincoln and Hon. Lucy Pelham. He married Catherine Pelham, daughter of Rt. Hon. Henry Pelham and Lady Catherine Manners, on 3 October 1744.
He succeeded his brother George as 9th Earl of Lincoln on 30 April 1730. HIs wife's uncle was created 1st Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyme with a special remainder to Henry, whom he succeeded as 2nd Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyme on 17 November 1768. On 1 December 1768 his surname was legally changed to Pelham-Clinton by Royal Licence.[1]
