Biography

"Ephraim Cock (aka Cox), son of Gabriel Cock, was baptized on 20 June 1705 at St. Paul’s Church in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Gabriel Cock’s wife was Maria Frände, and their children were: Peter, Gabriel, Rebecca, Margaret, David, Anna, Ephraim and possibly Isaac and Friend (1693 Census, pp. 31-32).

Ephraim Cock/Cox apparently married a daughter of Isaac Savoy (Dr. Craig, 3/23/2002; no reason given). 1693 Census at p. 137-38 discusses an Isaac Savoy, who made a deathbed nuncupative will on 4 November 1694, which named his wife Brita (Hendricksson) and children: David, Greta [Gertrude], Margaret, John, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the last four of which were under 13. It appears that the son Isaac would have been born in about the late 1680s and could have been the father of a daughter who married a man born in 1705. Whether this daughter is the same as Maria/Mary is not stated.

Ephraim and Maria/Mary Cock/Cox had a daughter Maria born on 29 January 1728 and baptized on 11 February 1728 at the Swedes’ Church at Raccoon Creek, present Swedesboro.

Ephraim and Maria/Mary Cock/Cox also appear to have had a son named Moses born ca 1735, a son named Israel born ca 1736, and a son named Ephraim born ca 1747. They also may have had a son named Isaac born ca 1730.

Ephraim Cox was one of the appraisers of the inventory of Mary Bray of Chester township, Burlington County, New Jersey on 6 October 1743. The executor of the estate was apparently from Gloucester County. (New Jersey Archives 30:58).

Ephraim Cox is last of record in New Jersey when a payment to him was noted in an account of the estate of John Eaton of Salem County on 9 June 1749 (NJ Archives 39: 159-60). He was not listed in the church census of 1753.

The earliest record of Ephraim Cox in Rowan County, North Carolina dates to 1753, the same year that county was created from Anson County.

An Ebenezer Fairchild visited Ephraim Cox in October 1757 (in North Carolina?) and noted the visit in his diary.

Ephraim Cox appears on a tax list in Rowan County, North Carolina in 1759. He appears to be living near Zachariah Cox (a descendant of the Swede Otto Ernest Kock) and other New Jersey settlers. Rowan County included settlers of Swedish families surnamed Anderson, Enochs, Stalcop, Bartleson, Garretson and others.

Moses Cox, planter of Rowan County, made his will on 20 January 1778, naming his wife Sarah, his three sons John Cox, Charles Cox and Moses Cox, his four daughters (not named), and his brother Israel Cox as Executor. Mary Cox, daughter of Moses, married Benjamin Scrivner in 1779.

The will of Israel Cox of Rowan County, dated 26 May 1778, names his wife Mary Cox, son David Cox (who “shall have my plantation or tract of land except the part lying on the other side of Cabin Creek provided that he pay to each of my other sons the sum of Thirty Pounds Currency of this State when they come of Age”), and names " my faithfull friend Benjamin Davis and Mons Park sole Executors." Mons is the Swedish equivalent of Moses.

The Bible of David Cox, son of Israel Cox, includes the following entries:

Israel Cox and Mary Quick were married July the 3rd and year of our Lord 1765.

Their children are listed as follows:

David Cox was born August the 27th day and year of our Lord 1766.
Ephraim Cox was born February 19th day Anno Domini 1769.
Benjamin Cox was born February 12th day Anno Domini 1771.
Benjamin Cox departed this life August the 5th day 1784.
Moses Cox was born Sept between 25th & 26th day 1773.
Susannah Cox was born December the 16th day Anno Domini 1778.

The David/Israel Cox Bible also states: “Ephraim Cox, Sen. departed this life the 3rd of June 1771.”

The name Moses Cox derives from the Swedish version Måns Cock. The name was common among the descendants of Peter Larsson Cock, whose wife was a daughter of Måns Svensson Lom. They had a son Måns and a number of grandsons called Måns Cock, all of whom became known as Moses Cox.

[...]"Little" Moses Cox (son of the Moses Cox who died in 1778) married Hannah Baird, who was the daughter of Andrew and Hannah Green Baird. The Greens and the Bairds migrated from Hunterdon County, New Jersey to Rowan County NC around 1750. Moses was b 5 Nov 1777, Rowan Co NC, d Apr 1826 Barren Co KY.

A Macon County, Missouri newspaper article about James K. Cox indicates that his family moved from New Jersey to North Carolina before the Revolution. James K. Cox was born 27 Nov 1844 in Hannibal MO and he was the son of Lewis Allen Cox who was born 25 Nov 1813. Lewis Allen Cox married Caroline Princess Baird. Lewis was the son of "Little" Moses Cox and Hannah Baird of Rowan County NC."

Cox-15006 and Cock-366 appear to represent the same person because: Both have same siblings (with possibly one exception). One has more source research.
