Biography

Early Life

Arthur Cocking was born in Staffordshire, England.

Arthur Albert Cocking was born in Tutbury, Staffordshire on July 19th 1876. He was the son Thomas Cocking, a travelling hawker, and his wife Sarah Troth, a laundress. ^{[1] [2]}

In 1881, Arthur was living on Walford Street in Redditch, Worcestershire with his parents and five older siblings. ^[3]

A decade later, in 1891, Arthur was living in the same house in Redditch with his mother and older sister Rose. His father was away in Chester (presumably as part of his work) with his eldest son and daughter-in-law. ^[4]

Married Life

After a seven month delay, Arthur married Martha Florence Clarke at St John's Church in Birmingham, Warwickshire on November 17th 1895. At the time of marriage both Arthur and Martha were living on Pickford Street and Arthur was working as a baker. ^{[5] [6]}

In 1901 Arthur was living in Deritend, at 80 Tilton Road, with his parents, wife and children. He was working as a bricklayer's labourer whilst his 70 year old father was still working as a hawker. ^[7]

By 1911 Arthur was living in his own five roomed house at 300 Cooksey Road in Small Heath, Birmingham with his wife, all six of his living children and his sister-in-law (who was suffering with gout). He was working as a baker again whilst his eldest son was a train cleaner for the Great Western Railway and his eldest daughter a cycle press worker. ^[8]

In 1939 Arthur was living at 126 Sydenham Road in Small Heath with his wife and children. He was employed as a builder's labourer whilst his son Stanley was working as a profiler. ^[1]

Death

Arthur died, aged 81, in early 1958 in Birmingham. He was survived by his children. ^[9]
