William was born in 1874. He had a brother named Jim Cockrell. He was the father of ten children: Homer Cockrell, Woodrow Cockrell, Henry Cockrell, Willie B. Cockrell, Herman Cockrell, Billie T. Cockrell, Fannie (Cockrell) Craft, Zona May (Cockrell) Austin, Kattie Bell (Cockrell) Allen, and Marie (Cockrell) Johnson. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of Antioch Methodist Church and lived in Smith County, MS for fifty years. He passed away in his Iris home on January of 1957 at the age of 82. Funeral services were held at Sharon Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Coats, MS by Mims Mitchell Funeral Home. Reverend Bill Hegwood officiated with the help of Reverend W. F. Sharp and H.B. Rushing. He was buried in Sharon Presbyterian Church Cemetery. His obituary was published on January 17, 1957 in the Magee Courier.
