Garnett Ashby Coffindaffer was born in Benson, West Virginia on July 13, 1888 to James Coffindaffer and Ada Benson. He was the eldest of five children born to the couple.
Garnett was initially raised on a farm in the Union District of Harrison County, West Virginia. Either in 1897 or 1898, the family moved to a farm in Freemans Creek, West Virginia. Garnett's father died in 1899 and his mother died in 1900.
After the death of his parents, Garnett and his siblings moved in with their widowed grandmother on her farm in the Union District of Harrison County, West Virginia. Garnett and his brothers worked the farm alongside their grandmother.
Garnett married Beryl Walker circa 1912. The couple settled in Miletus, West Virginia where he worked for the Hope Natural Gas Company. By 1920, the family had returned to Kincheloe, West Virginia. They were living on a farm there. Garnett and Beryl had five children.
By 1930, Garnett had returned to work for the Hope Natural Gas Company as a lineworker. In 1940 through 1950, his title was a well tender.
Garnett died in Lewis County, West Virginia in February 1976. He was 78 years old. He is buried alongside his wife in Good Hope Masonic Cemetery in Good Hope, West Virginia.
