Elon Cole was born in 1852[1] in High Bickington, Devon, England to Joseph Cole and Harriet Fanny (Moyse) Cole. His birth was registered in Torrington, Devon in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Moyse.[2]

In 1861 Elon Cole (age 8, Scholar) lived at Middlewood in High Bickington with his father Joseph (46, Occupier of 30 Acres Of Land), mother Fanny (40, House Keeper), and six siblings: Joseph (19, Plough Man), John (13, Cow Boy), Benjamin (10, Scholar), Sarah (12, Scholar), Susan (6, Scholar), and Ann (3).[3]

In 1871 Elon Cole (age 19, Scholar) lived in High Bickington with his father Joseph (57, Farmer), mother Harriot (50, Farmer's Wife), and four siblings: John (25, Farmer's Son), Burnard (21, Farmer's Son), Susan (16, Scholar), and Ann (13, Scholar).[4]

In 1881 Elon Cole (age 28, Shepherd) lived in High Bickington with his father Joseph (68, Farmer of 90 Acres), mother Fanny (60, Farmers Wife), two sisters: Susan Ellicott (25, Ag Dairy Woman) and Annie Cole (22, Dressmaker), niece Annie Cole (13, Scholar), two nephews: Henry Cole (11, Scholar) and Edwin Ellicott (2), and two servants: William Warren (16, Ag Servant Indoor) and William Heal (15, Ag Servant Indoor).[5]

Elen Cole married Mary Elizabeth Pedler in 1890. The marriage was registered in Torrington in the third quarter of the year.[6]

Elon and Mary had one daughter:

  1. Mary Caroline (Cole) Slape (1893-1977)

In 1891 Elon Cole (age 38, Farmer Son) lived in High Bickington with his father Joseph (75, Farmer), mother Harriet (70, Housekeeper), wife Mary E (36), nephew Edwin Ellacott (11, Scholar), and two servants: James Leythorne (19, Farmer Servant) and Richard Medland (14, Farmer Servant).[7]

Elon was the beneficiary of his father's estate in 1894: "COLE Joseph of High Bickington Devon farmer died 6 January 1894 at Snape High Bickington Probate Exeter 26 May to Elon Cole farmer Effects £510 11s. 6d."[8]

In 1901 Elan Cole (age 47, Farmer) lived in High Bickington with his wife Elizabeth (46), daughter Caroline (8), and mother Harriett (80, Living On Own Means).[9]

In 1911 Elon Cole (age 57, Farmer) lived in High Bickington with his wife Mary Elizabeth (56), mother Harriet (90), daughter Mary Caroline (18, Dairymaid), and servant Ernest Quick (26, Horseman).[10]

Elon's wife passed away in 1932.

Elon Cole passed away on 13 Mar 1940, aged 87 years. His death was registered in Barnstaple, Devon in the first quarter of the year.[11]

"COLE Elon of Weywood Chittlehampton Devonshire died 13 March 1940 Probate London 23 May to Mary Caroline Slape (wife of Robert Slape). Effects £1453 9s. 3d."[12]

He is buried at St Hieritha's Churchyard in Chittlehampton, Devon with his wife: "In Loving Memory of Mary Elizabeth, the wife of Elon Cole of Heywood, who fell asleep Feb-24-1932 aged 77 years. "Until the day break." Also of the above name Elon Cole, who fell asleep March 13th 1940, aged 87 years. "Peace, Perfect Peace."[13]
