DEATH NOTICE. COLE.—On the 4th December, at Melbourne-street, N.A., George William Cole, husband of A. E. Cole, and father of Mrs. H. Lyne, late of Parkside, and Mrs. John LeCornu, jun., of the Semaphore, in his 71st year. "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord."
OBITUARY. DEATH OF MR. G. W. COLE. Our obituary notices announce the death of Mr. Geo. W. Cole, who for 28 years held the office of city valuator and for seven years represented the Burra in the House of Assembly. Mr. Cole was taken suddenly ill last Saturday week, and died on Monday evening at his residence, Melbourne-street, North Adelaide. He leaves a wife, two daughters (Mrs. H. Lyne and Mrs. J. Le Cornu, jun.), and 10 grandchildren to mourn his loss. The deceased gentleman, late D.S. of the A.D., I.O.R., and hon, secretary of the S. A. Total Abstinence League, was born in Sussex on January 15, 1823. In March, 1839, he left for South Australia, and was associated with the few who founded the Total Abstinence Society in this colony in 1840, when he was chosen one of the hon. secretaries, a position he continued to hold for over 50 years, when he was elected one of the patrons. In 1847 he visited Hobart Town, and became connected with the I.O. Rechabites, and on his return to Adelaide in 1848 he instituted the order in South Australia. On the formation of the South Australian district in 1860 he was elected the first D.C.R., and when the Albert district was formed was elected district secretary, which office he held until February, 1893, when the annual council voted him £150 as a token of esteem. He was elected for the Burra district in 1860 with Mr. W. Dale, defeating Sir G. S. Kingston and Dr. Brown, and at the general elections subsequently was twice elected without opposition. He was one of the first to move in Parliament on the subject of suppression of Sunday railway traffic and Sunday liquor traffic, in favor of leasing and sale of Crown lands on the deferred payment principle, the opening of the various institute reading-rooms free to the public, and the establishment of a reformatory for juvenile offenders. After retiring from the position of city valuator on leave of absence for nine months on full pay, he conducted a business on his own account as an assessor and valuator.
