Biography

Henry Coles birth was registered in Ringwood, Hampshire in the 1st quarter of 1844.^[1] In 1851 he is shown as one of 9 children in the home of William and Harriet Coles in Ringwood.^[2] He would remain in his parents' home in 1861.^[3]

27 year old Henry Coles departed London on the ship Peruvian arriving at Quebec City on August 13, 1870.^[4]

On August 13, 1871 at Brantford, Ontario, Henry Coles (27) married Jane Bradford (26). Henry a farmer at Brantford was born in Ringwood, Hampshire to William Coles and Harriet Mist. Jane, a resident of Brantford was also born in Ringwood, to William and Mary Bradford. It was a first marriage for both. Witnesses were Emelie Coles and Clara Usher, both of Brantford.^[5]

Census records for 1871 and 1881 have not been located, but it is known that Henry's first wife, Jane Bradford died in May of 1887 leaving Henry to raise 3 children: Nellie, Harriet and Harry.

On December 25, 1888, Henry Coles (44) married Jane Ann Gauld Grant (30) at Normanby in Grey County, Ontario. Henry, a farmer at Sandwich, was born in England to William Coles and Harriet Mist. He identified as Widowed. Jane, single and a resident of Brantford, was born in Normanby to William and Margaret Grant. Witnesses were Wm Grant and Isabella S Grant, both of Normanby.^[6] They would have 2 children, Margaret and Alfred.

Research Notes

NOTE of caution: There is another Henry Coles in Ringwood who married an Emma Wyatt in early 1864. This Henry Cole is cited on Census as working in a brewery and remains in Ringwood through at least 1901.
