Priestly Mary Collyer was born in 1829 in Farnham, Surrey, England, United Kingdom. She was the daughter of Andrew Collyer & Mary Bigs. She was baptised on 22 May 1829 in Farnham, Surrey, England.[1]

In the 1841 census Priestly (age 12) was studying at Miss Reoman's School in Streatham, Surrey, England with her younger sister Emily. There's a pretty portrait of these two sisters on familysearch, painted in 1850 by Margaret Gillies.[2]

Priestly married John Edward Bovill on 20 August 1850 at St. Mary's in Beddington, Surrey, England.[3]

On the 20th inst., at Beddington, John Edward Bovill, Esq., of Milford-lane, Strand, and of Epsom, Surrey, to Priestly Mary, eldest daughter of Andrew Collyer, Esq., of Beddington, Surrey. (London Evening Standard - Wednesday 21 August 1850, p. 4)'

In the 1871 census Priestly (age 42) lived with her husband, 11 children and 11 servants at Soudes Place in Dorking, Surrey, England. Her husband was a Corn Factor.[21]

In the 1881 census Priestly (age 52) was the wife of John Edw Bovill in Sondes Place, Dorking, Surrey, England. Her husband was a Corn Factor. There were 6 children still at home and 9 servants.[22].

In the 1891 census Priestly (age 62) was the widowed head of household in Dorking, Surrey, England. She was living on her own means with 8 adult children living at home as well as house guests, grandchildren and 12 servants.[23].

Priestly Mary Bovill (age 66) died on June 20, 1895 at their home Sondes-place in Dorking, Surrey, England, United Kingdom. She was buried on the 22nd.[24] Priestly's sizable estate was left to three of their sons.[25]

Research Notes

  • They had a very large family for a couple who married in their early 20s, with one born almost every year until she was 43. Normally a couple would have 12 or fewer children, with one child born every 1.5-2 years until the woman was about 40. She had 16 children. Two children haven't been located on the GRO, but were christened as their own. Those children are Anna Louisa and Francis Henry. It's possible they were illegitimate grandchildren, christened as their own.
  • GRO has been checked for any children born with the Surname Bovill and mother's maiden name Collyer between 1850-1875. The filter for "Similar Names" was selected to catch spelling errors
