Biography

Robert was born about 1783 either in Kentucky[1] or in Scotland.[2] His parents are not presently confirmed.

He married Elizabeth (Betsy) French on 18 Oct 1804 in Washington County, Kentucky[3]. She likely came to Kentucky with her family as a young girl from St Mary's County MD.

Robert and Betsy had at least 9 children:

Robert likely died sometime before 1 Jun 1830, as Robert does not appear in the 1830 census and Betsy was remarried before the end of the year.

Research Notes

Place of birth

There is no known record of his birth. According to a sketch of his son Edward in An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon,[1] he was "from Kentucky". According to the 1880 U.S. federal censuses for his son Thomas, he was born in Kentucky,[4] while the 1900 census for his son Andrew indicates that he was born in Scotland.[5]

Parents

Robert was married in Washington County KY in 1804. At least two other persons with the surname "Constable" were living in Washington County at that time, one of whom could have been his father. Stephen Constable (c1750-c1820) was originally from Maryland (where Robert's wife was from) and was living next to his son, Zachariah Constable, in the 1810 census.[6]

Date of death

There is no record which clearly refers to Robert after the birth of his youngest son Andrew in 1827. Robert does not appear in the 1830 U.S. federal census.

On 25 Dec 1830, a woman named "Elizabeth Constible" (likely his wife Elizabeth) married a man named "Richard Malone" in Jackson County, Missouri. As Robert does not appear in the 1830 U.S. federal census, it seems likely that Robert died before 1 Jun 1830.
