Biography

"The earliest record of a license granted for a ferry service was to William Royden in 1688. This ferry presumably located on Cooper Street, was later abandoned by Royden but continued in 1695 by Daniel Cooper and was to remain in the Cooper family for 150 year. Ferry systems were also established by William Cooper (Daniel’s father) at Coopers Point (established c. 1689)"[1]

"Daniel Cooper of Newton Township, youngest son of William and Margaret, born 1 mo. 27, 1675."[2]

"Daniel Cooper, son of William, of Pine Point, and Abigail, daughter of Hannah Woods, of Hopewell, [marrried] at public meeting at her house 3rd, 1st mo., 1695. [Old Style].[3]

Child of Daniel and Abigail Cooper

  1. William Cooper (1694-)

Sarah Spicer and Daniel Cooper, members of Newton Monthly Meeting, were married 16 February 1695/6 at her father's house. The record of marriage lists their marriage promises to each other and the names of twenty-nine Friends who attended the ceremony.[4]

Child of Daniel and Sarah Cooper:

  1. Samuel Cooper (bef.1702-)
  2. Daniel Cooper[5]

Death and Legacy

Daniel Cooper of Gloucester County died intestate; the inventory, conducted 30 Mar 1715 "incl. three male and one female negro slaves £140". Sarah Cooper attested to the inventory. [6]

If "Sarah Cooper" was alive in 1715 to attest to her husband's inventory, when did Sarah Spicer die? Or did Daniel remarry a third time to another Sarah? Sarah Spicer presumed deceased by 1702 because she was not named in her mother's will, but her son was. Perhaps the abstract is incorrect? Need to check mom's original will.

Enslaved Persons

  • "three male and one female negro slaves £140".

This information is from the will abstract, it is possible more information is contained on the original inventory, which can be obtained from NJSA (possibly FamilySearch?)
