John was born in 1841. He was the son of John Cope and Winnie Quick. He passed away in 1926.
John Thomas Cope served in Company K, 8th Regiment, South Carolina, and Company L, 20th South Carolina Volunteers. A Private. He was discharged on 12 July 1862. After the war, John Thomas Cope lost a leg due to an injury sustained during the war. He received a pension for his service. His discharge paper listed his appearance (at 17 years of age): 5 feet/6 inches tall. Dark complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair.
