LaSalle was born in 1843, the daughter of Virginia planters and slaveholders. While attending the Lynchburg Female Academy, she met the widowed Confederate Maj. Gen. George E. Pickett, whom she married a few months after the disastrous charge at the battle of Gettysburg. They had two sons.
During their stay in Montreal, Canada, after the war, she taught French, Latin, and piano and sold her jewelry to support the family. After their return to Virginia and her husband's death, she accepted a clerical position with the U.S. Pensions Office.
Sallie became a prolific author, public speaker, and noted apologist for the "Lost Cause," a romanticized view of the Confederacy, appearing at veterans' events and engaging in numerous lecture tours.
She passed away in 1931.
