Biography

Castrenza Naro (aka Cosentino aka Sinsirico) is a Corleone native resident, the daughter of Valentino and Felicia Nano.

Open Issue: Castrenza is born around 1758, based on her reported age in 1794, and is ten years older than this (b. 1748), based on her age in 1807. Her age at death makes her ten more years older (b. 1738). This is the most believable, given she marries in 1756. Ages given in the 1794 stato delle anime conflict with other secondary records of age, from six to 23 years difference.

Castrenza marries Leoluca Ligotino on 11 January 1756. Her father has died by this time, and her mother is living.

Castrenza and Leoluca have at least five children: Caterina (1769), Pietro (1775), Gioachino (c. 1776), Carmela (1780), and Salvatore (c. 1785).

Caterina is born and baptized 13 December 1769, named after her paternal grandmother. Her godparents are Ciro and Domenica Arcuri, a married couple.[1]

Pietro is born 4 December 1775. His godparents are Maestro Stefano and Anna Licata, a married couple.[2]

Gioachino is born around 1776, based on his age in the 1794 stato delle anime. Based on his reported age at death, he is almost twenty years older (b. 1757).

Ambrosio is the baptismal name given by the midwife to a miscarriage in the fifth month, on 6 December 1778. This record calls his parents Leoluca and Caterina Ligutino.[3]

The family lives in the cortile di Navarra from at least 1779. That year, Leoluca Ligotino is reportedly 42 (b. 1737), his wife Castrenza, 31 (b. 1748), and their children Gioachino, 11 (b. 1768), Caterina, 7 (b. 1772), and Salvatore, 4 (b. 1775).[4] Pietro does not appear in this record, indicating he has died by this time.

Carmela Maria is born and baptized 30 July 1780. Her godparents are her paternal uncle Vincenzo and Oliva Ligutino, a married couple.[5]

Caterina is born around 1782, based on her age in the 1794 stato. Based on this, she is also only eleven years old when she marries. Based on her reported age at death, she is six years older (b. 1776). Caterina is named after her paternal grandmother.

Salvatore is born around 1785, based on his age in the 1794 stato. Based on this, he is eleven years old when he marries. Based on his reported age in the 1807 stato delle anime, he is forty years older (b. 1745). Based on this, Salvatore is two years older than his mother is reported to be, that same year. He is named after his paternal grandfather.

In 1794 Leoluca, age 48 (b. 1746), lives with his wife, Castrenza, 36 (b. 1758), and children Gioachino, 18 (b. 1776), Caterina, 12 (b. 1782), Salvatore, 9 (b. 1785), and Carmela, reportedly one year old (she is 14), in the Cortile di Navarra in Corleone.

Leoluca dies at age 70 (b. 1731) on 10 September 1801. Castrenza survives him.

Carmela marries Salvatore Cammarata on 8 January 1804. Castrenza is called Castrenza Sinsirico in this record.

In the 1807 stato delle anime, Castrenza, 59 (b. 1748), a widow, lives in the cortile di Navarra with her unmarried children, Gioachino, 38 (b. 1769), and Caterina, 36 (b. 1771).

Caterina dies, reportedly around age 40 (b. 1776) on 14 August 1816. She is unmarried. Both of her parents have died, according to this record, though sometimes whether the mother is still living or not, the record is written as if the couple have both passed.

Death of Castrenza / Open Issue

Open Issue: There is a death record that may be Castrenza's, calling her Castrenza Naro, widow of Leoluca Ligotino. Castrenza dies at around age 82 (b. 1738---ten years older than in 1807) on 25 December 1820. She is the daughter of the late Valentino and Felicia Naro. Her mother's surname is not known at this time.

Salvatore dies at age 46 (b. 1783) on 5 September 1829, the widower of Bernarda. This record calls his mother Castrenza Valentino.

Carmela dies at age 70 (b. 1770) on 9 December 1840, the widow of Salvatore. Her mother, called Castrenza Cusintino in this record, has died by this time.

Gioachino dies at age 90 (b. 1757) on 3 December 1847. He is unmarried. He may be only 78 at death, based on his age in 1807.
