William Orpet Cottrill was born in Kincheloe, West Virginia on June 25, 1916 to Dolph Cottrill and Ocie Nicholas. He was the eldest of three children born to the couple.
William was initially raised in Jane Lew or Kincheloe, West Virginia but by 1920, the family was living in Union, West Virginia. By 1923, the family bought a home on 204 Duncan Avenue in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
On October 29, 1935 William married Helen Gonsorchik in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Between 1935 and 1940, the couple moved to Charleston, West Virginia and lived in a rented home with his sister and brother-in-law. William drove a bus for Greyhound. However, sometime between 1947 and 1950, William and Helen, along with their young daughter, moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. William's younger brother was living with the family there. William worked as a sales manager for the O.K. Trucking Company. He was also a member of the Price Hill Masonic Lodge 524.
William died on July 2, 1957 at his Covedale, Ohio home from a heart attack. He was 41 years old. He is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
