Notes

Note N17Agnes' birth certificate confirms her birth date, place, parents names and their date and place of marriage.
Agnes's baptism certificate confirms that she was baptised at Braefoot, Beith on March 11th, 1903.
The 1911 census finds Anges and her parents living at Braefoot, Glengarnock. Agnes is described as daughter, aged 1, born in Glengarnock, Ayrshire. Her age is clearly wrong - should have been aged 8.
Also in the house are:
Robert Craig, Head of House, aged 48, married, occupation Joiner (and employer), born in Beith, Ayrshire;
Maggie Craig, wife, aged 45, born in Neilston, Renfrew;
David Craig, son, aged 21, single, occupation Engineer's Fitter, born in Beith, Ayrshire;
James A Craig, son, aged 19, single, occupation Joiner, born in Beith, Ayrshire;
Robert Craig, son, aged 17, single, occupation Invoice Clerk, Steelworks, born in Beith, Ayrshire;
William Craig, son, aged 9, scholar, born in Glengarnock, Ayrshire.
Agnes is known to one and all as "Aunt Nancy". She lived with her brother David at "Norwood", 17 Grahamstone Avenue, Glengarnock from 1952 until she was taken to a home for the elderly around 1992. According to her wartime National Registration Identity Card, she was living at Hunterslie, Daisybank, Glengarnock in 1943 (when the card was issued), and stayed there until 1950, when she moved to 14 Garnock Grove, Glengarnock, then to "Norwood" in 1952. She died in 1996.
She worked as a factor for rented houses, and also looked after the family.
She was an incredible woman, with a very clear memory of family (and other) events, even until her later years. She used to love giving family "teas" on a sunday afternoon, and would remember exactly who had eaten what from what plate, no matter how many people were there. She was great with children and would often recall stories of older times with the family. Its a pity no-one wrote them all down. Its only on putting together the family history that I am beginning to understand who some of the people she talked about were.
She wrote to her niece, Jean Kennedy Campden (nee Craig), in the 1980's or early 1990's explaining the family structure. We have the letter and a structure drawn up by Jean. The vast majority of details have been confirmed.
Anges never married or had any children. She was engaged to Bobby Dunlop. a cattle dealer, at one point. The story (according to Betty Craig) is that he turned up after a few drinks to take her to a dance one night, and was told not to set his foot in the house again by Agnes parents.
The letter from Aunt Nancy to Jean Campden detailing the family history is reproduced below:
Your (Jean Campden's) Grandmother's name was Margaret Anderson, born at Rigfoot Farm, Uplawmoor. She was the youngest daughter of James Anderson and his wife Jean Sturock Anderson. She was his second wife, his first wife had 2 sons, Robert Anderson & Thomas Anderson and 2 daughters, one was a Mrs Stirrat, the other a Mrs Graham. His second wife had 4 daughters, the eldest was Jane Miller Anderson, born at Sandhills Farm, Ayr. She died in Infancy. Next was Marion Anderson born at Giffordland Farm, Dalry. Next was Elizabeth Anderson born at Giffordland Farm, Dalry. Next was Margaret Anderson born at Rigfoor Farm.
James Anderson, your great grandfather, died when your grandmother (my mother Margaret Anderson) was very young. So your great grandmother came out of the farm with her 3 daughters and came to a dairy in Beith where she died.
Of the 3 daughters Marion the eldest married John Lamont, Shutterflat Farm, Beith, and Elizabeth married William Thomson, Old Mill Farm, Beith (Lugton). He died and she married Bob Young, Beith (railway) Station Master.
Your grandmother the youngest daughter married Robert Craig from Langside Farm, Gateside, Beith.
The two sons of your great grandfather, Robert & Thomas - Robert went to London, he was referred to as "London Bob" - he had a public house in London. I remember my mother telling me about her sister Elizabeth and her visiting him in London.
So that makes your great grandfather was James Anderson. His son Thomas married ? and had a daughter who married Mitchell, Hall of Caldwell Farm. Their daughter Annie Mitchell was Jean Jack's mother. That makes Jean Jack's great grandfatherwas Thomas, son of James Anderson, your great grandfather.
That makes your great grandfather's son was Jean Jack's great great grandfather.
James Stirrat from Higham Cupar Fife always came to see his Aunt Margaret (your grandmother). She was 4 years younger than him. His own mother Margaret - a daughter of James Anderson - died before my mother (your grandmother) was born. That was why she was called Margaret. That makes your grandmother (my mother) was Jean Jack's grandmother's aunt (half aunt) the same father Anderson but different mothers.
That makes your grandmother was a half sister to Jean Jack's great great grandfather.
(A little confusing and not all quite correct, but the vast majority checks out with formal records).
On Agnes' 21st birthday she received a "Happy Birthday" postcard from her friend Mary living at Longbar, Glengarnock. The front is a beautiful picture of a young girl, and the back says "with heartiest congratulations and wishes for many happy returns. From Mary. 15th Feb 1924. Longbar, Glengarnock".
Mary must have been a very special friend indeed for Agnes to keep the post card for so long.
