Matilda was born in 1835 in Chaddesley Corbett, Worcestershire, England to Thomas and Mary Crane and baptised in that village on 27 December of the same year.[1]
Matilda lived for most of her life in and around the Chaddesley Corbett area, about 5 miles east of Kidderminster. In 1841 when she was 4 years old, her family was living in the hamlet of Hill Pool in Chaddesley Corbett where her father worked as an agricultural labourer.[2] In 1851 Matilda’s family lived in the village of Chaddesley Corbett,[3] then in 1861 in the hamlet of Woodrow.[4] Interestingly, Matilda gave birth to three children (Emma in 1856, William in 1858, and Agnes in 1860) before she was married in 1864 and while she was residing with her parents.
Matilda was about 29 years old and single when she married William Perry on the 9 October 1864 at Saint Thomas's Church, Dudley, Worcestershire.[5] William was 48 years old at the time and it was his second marriage – his first wife Charlotte had died just 4 months earlier in June, leaving him to care for several children. This was perhaps a contributing factor in the marriage taking place so soon after Charlotte’s death.
Matilda and William moved to nearby Stone and continued to add to their family, eventually having another six children in addition to the children each of them brought to the marriage. Two of these children did not survive childhood (Ann Thirza 1867-1870, and Guenever 1870-1870). Census data shows that Matilda lived in Stone for the entire period after her marriage and the death of husband William in 1895 up until her departure for the U.S. with her daughter Minnie and her husband in 1903.[6][7][8][9] In July 1903 Matilda immigrated to the U.S. arriving in Boston, Massachusetts in August. She accompanied her daughter Minnie, Minnie’s husband Fred Harry Piper and their 10 month old young son Cyril on board the Ivernia. Their stated intended place of residence was with Fred’s brother and sister in 41 West St, Lawrence, Massachusetts.[10]
Matilda died in September 1909 of a valvular heart lesion in Lawrence, Massachusetts and was buried in Bellevue Cemetary in Lawrence.[11]
