Biography

John Crane was born in Lincolnshire, England.

John Crane was born in about 1831 in Crowle, Lincolnshire, England. He was the son of John Crane and Mary Pettinger, and was baptised on 5 January 1831 in Crowle, where his father worked as a Labourer. ^{[1] [2]}

In 1851 John age 20, was a Farm Servant, in the household of Thomas Maskill in North Duffied, Yorkshire.^[3] His mother died in 1851, and in 1861 age 28, he was living in Crowle, Lincolnshire with his widowed father and siblings. ^{[4] [5]}

John's marriage to Ann Eliza Pidd was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1872 in the Thorne district.^[6] The marriage took place on 25 December 1872, and was reported in the Stamford Mercury the following January. "At the Baptist Chapel, Crowle, on the 25th ult., Mr John Crane Jnr to Miss Ann Elizabeth Pidd". ^[7] In 1881they were living in Crowle, John 49 was an agricultural Labourer, wife Ann was 31, and they had four sons. ^[8]

John's death (age 56) was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1889 in the Thorne district.^[9]

Re: 1871 census: The ages given in 1871 census are well out of what they should be, however I think this is definitely the same family. The names are right and they seem to be living in the same area as in 1861, with some similar family names living around them as in 1861.
