Biography

George was a remarkable inventor who became rich but died in relative poverty.

He was involved in the development of the Teletext Printer and became very wealthy. Then, he sold his business to design and develop a new type of vessel - the now named “SWATH” (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull). He offered the design plans for a more stable sailing vessel (ship) to the U.K. government and later to the U.S. government, but they were rejected. Consequently, he lost his fortune and never sailed on his new vessel.

Ironically, a modified version of the SWATH is now accepted (but not widely) especially for research ships in ocean locations. However, there is also increasing interest for military and cruise ship purposes where improved stability is a requirement.

The Canadian Coast Guard Ship CCGS Frederick G. Creed, a SWATH vessel, is named after him.

His first wife was Jane Russell with whom he had 4 children. His second wife was Valerie Leopoldine Gisella Layton, née Franzky.
