Anecdotes

  • Bessie Maud was an excellent baker! My earliest memories of her were of walking into a large kitchen, filled with yummy smells. Whenever our family would visit during the school holidays, I loved to walk into her big, warm & sunny kitchen to smell all those amazing, mouth-watering aromas from her baking projects. And, of course, I got to scrape the mixing bowl after I’d “helped” her. (Maybe it was her gentle way of placating an annoying little granddaughter, too!) The kitchen at the back of the house had a huge window that looked out on to a flourishing kitchen garden. The kitchen seemed to be flooded with sunlight, in the otherwise dark house at 35 Buruda Street, Mayfield West. Her specialties were all kinds of cakes & biscuits, bread & pies, for the family & others. When I would go for a walk down to the corner butcher’s shop, she would always take him a little sample of her recent biscuit or cake project. She would always take a cake on a plate with us when I accompanied her to church on Sunday mornings. I don’t at all remember her savoury cooking in meat dishes, for example. My younger brothers, Greg and Neil Smith, say they thought her a poor cook because her dinners were really awful, with bland & watery beef & vegetable stews being "the worst”. So perhaps it’s the cakes and sweet treats that she excelled at but not the other dinner meals. (Contributed by Erica Smith-Hawron)
