Biography

Flag of Devon (adopted 2003)
John Cross was born in Devon, England.

John Cross was baptized 13 NOV 1734. Axmouth, Devon, England. [1]Axmouth, Devon, England is a village one mile from the sea. The St. Michael's Church is probably where John Cross was baptized, married and had his children baptized. The church is an attraction when visitor's come to Axmouth. It has a Medieval Wall painting, a 15th century tower, and a carved Norman doorway. In 1746 a mural monument was created to Richard Hallett of Stedcombe. [2]

His parents: John Cross, the elder and Elizabeth Jefferd [3] John Cross, the elder, was listed as a Tallow Chandler, and rope boiler. [4]Tallow chandlers were perceived as a very low class trade. Tallow was a cheap animal fat, usually the waste material from meat. Since, the Cross family lived in a village, it is likely John Cross had a shop where he made his candles and sold them to homeowners. They were not used in the churches or wealthy homes, who used candles made from beeswax. John, the younger, is listed as a baker, he somehow managed to elevate his position, somewhat, because on his death record the Bishop of the Axmouth church, wrote that he was a pauper.[5]

John Cross, the younger, and Thomazin Sampson both of the parish were married by Banns, on the 9th of February 1762, Axmouth, Devon, England. Thomazin Sampson was the daughter of Charles Sampson, husbandman/labourer. [6]

John Cross died November 6, 1788, Axmouth, Devon, England, and was buried 11 NOV 1788, Axmouth, Devon, England. John Cross Baker who married Thomazin the daughter of Charles Sampson labourer died Nov the 6th and was buried the 11th day of the same month. Pauper. [7][8]
