Biography

Moses H Crouch was born on June 14, 1818 in Huttonsville, Randolph, West Virginia, United States. His parents were Andrew Crouch and Elizabeth Hutton.

In about 1842 he married Caroline (1821-1873) in Huttonsville, Randolph, Virginia (source needed). Together they had at least two children.

  1. Eliza A. Crouch (1843–1874)
  2. Mary E. Crouch (1845–1871)

In 1850, according to the United States census he was 30 years old and living with his wife and 2 children at their home in Randolph. [1]

In 1860 he was 42 years old and living with his wife and teenage daughters at their home in Randolph. [2]

His daughter Eliza married at the end of 1865, [3] and in the 1870 census he was living with his wife, daughter Mary (22), cousin James Hutton (14) and a lodger William Scott (49). [4]

After Caroline's death in 1873 he married Christina Buckey See, also previously widowed. They were married in Grafton, Taylor, Virginia on November 14, 1878. He was 59 years old and she was 34 years old with a 6 year old son. [5]

In 1880 he was 61 years old and living with his new wife (36), his stepson, his cousin James (23) and two house guests. [6]

Moses died on November 18, 1893 at his home Lee Bill in the district of Huttonsville, Randolph, West Virginia, United States. He was laid to rest at the Old Brick Churchyard Cemetery in Huttonsville. [7]

Below is the transcription of his will. Probate was filed on November 28, 1893. The people mentioned in his will are his second wife Christina Buckey (C.B. Crouch), his grandsons Ken and Jubel Ward, the children of his daughter Eliza who passed away in 1874, and James Hutton, the cousin who was listed during the 1870 and 1880 census.


Will of Moses H. Crouch
Be it remembered that I, Moses H. Crouch of the County of Randolph and State of West Virginia, do make this my last will and testament in manut following; That is to say, -
I order and direct that all my just and lawful debts shall be paid with convenient speed,
To my wife, C.B. Crouch I give and devise to her and her heirs forever my house and farm on which I now reside including the mill situated on said property all of which is situated on the East side of the Tygarts Valley River and the waters of Becca's Creed the larger portion of which farm and property I purchased from Levi Ward.
I also give and devise to my wife C. B. Crouch and her heirs forever a certain parcel of timber land known as Peter Prill land which I purchased of Adonijah Ward lying between the waters of Becca and Riffles Creeks and joining the lands of Alfred Hutton.
To my grandson Ken C Ward I give and devise all the land I bought of the heirs of the late John A. Hutton that is to say, the farm lying on the East side of the Tygarts Valley River joining the lands of Warwics Hutton, Andrew Crouch and Wirt C Ward. This entire farm I give and devise to him and his heirs forever.
To my grandson Jubal E. Ward I give and devise all the land I now own in the District of Mingo, this County and State, known as my Mountain farm and call the Sinskings Spring Land. To him and his heirs I give and devise this property forever.
Further I will and bequeath to my wife C. B. Crouch and her heirs forever all my household and kitchen furniture and also all my farming utensils of whatever kind and wherever found.
I also will and bequeath to my two grandsons Kent C. Ward and Jubal E. Ward each a sum of Two Thousand Dollars to be paid them as speedily as convenient by my administrator out of my bonds and notes in my possession at the time of my death.
I will and bequeath to Lee Crouch, Eli Crouch, James Hutton and Lee Wawsley, Decons and Trustees of the Tygarts Valley Presbyterian Church and their successors, in trust for the use of the congregation of the above mentioned Church the sum of ($200) Two Hundred Dollars for the purpose of purchasing Manse property or other improvements of the Church property.
The residue of my estate whether in monies, notes, bonds, in live stock not otherwise disposed of above, I direct to be valued by appraisement and divided among my wife C. B. Crouch and my grandsons Kent C. Ward and Jubal S. Ward the 3 to share and share alike.
Further, I direct that should either of my grandsons, Kent C. Ward or Jubal E. Ward die without issue and without having disposed of the property which I have above given and devised to him, by will on deed, his property shall revert to the surviving brother. If by will or deed, he should however have made a legal disposition of his property it shall there for stand by my will and his.
I hereby appoint as my administrator my nephews Lee Crouch in whom I have always had my confidence to settle up my estate according to this my last will and testament and according to the laws of this commonwealth.
In witness whereof I have signed and sealed and published and declared this instrument as my will at Lee Bill my home, Huttonsville District Randolph Co. W. V. this the 8th day of November in the year of Our Lord 1893.

  • unsure of his wife's last name, no marriage record found or death registration for her, although there is a gravestone with her married name. It's possible her maiden name really was Crouch, since there were many families in the community of Huntsville with the same lastname.
